Berkeley City Council is poised to make decisions on a wide range of housing, transportation, public safety, and parks issues. Major action items include a public hearing on changing the city’s inclusionary housing in-lieu fee for detached single-family homes, a likely vote on a Hopkins Street repaving plan that would add major bike and pedestrian safety improvements, and a referral to review how the city defines and regulates adult-oriented businesses, including possible consideration of vaping shops, in downtown. The council is also expected to approve contracts and funding for animal care, emergency medical supplies, a possible FEMA grant application to replace the city’s fire and rescue boat, food assistance through Berkeley Food Network, and several parks and waterfront projects, including the Santa Fe Trackbed park conversion and marina dock work. Other items include steps to address long-vacant or stalled commercial properties, support for downtown social-service outreach and a school-supply giveaway, and joining an amicus brief opposing the EPA’s rollback of greenhouse-gas vehicle standards.
